Sequel Returns to Slums of City of God
“City of Men” begins atop the metaphorically named Dead End Hill in Rio de Janeiro, where a gun-toting gang is lazily contemplating a swim. With the sun beating down, the gang, led by a charismatic figure named Midnight (Jonathan Haagensen), decides to head down the hill to the beach. Their preparation isn’t gathering towels, but quickly establishing a perimeter of guards and calling the cops to alert them that they’re “coming through.” (Continue Reading…)

Council may ask mayor to quit
The City Council took its first step Thursday to call for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s resignation in the interest of preserving the integrity of city government, while the mayor repeatedly said throughout the day that he had no intention of resigning. “This is what I was born to do,” the mayor said Thursday after visiting a group of senior citizens during his first public appearance since the release of secret documents related to three police whistle-blower cases that cost $8.4 million. Republicans decry use of ‘Hussein’ in Obama’s name
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan formally denounced on Thursday the Tennessee Republican Party’s use of Barack Obama’s full name in a recent news release questioning the Illinois senator’s commitment to Israel. Some in the GOP say the use of Sen. Barack Obama’s middle name in a release is a distraction. “The RNC rejects these kinds of campaign tactics,” Duncan said in a statement. “We believe this election needs to be about the critical issues confronting our nation.” (Continue Reading…)

Kenyans celebrate historic deal

Kenyans have been celebrating the power-sharing deal to end the country’s two-month political crisis.

Thousands of dancing and cheering people poured onto the streets of Kisumu, the home town of opposition leader Raila Odinga. He is set to become prime minister in a coalition with President Mwai Kibaki. The deal to end the crisis which saw some 1,500 people killed and 600,000 left homeless has also been warmly welcomed elsewhere in the country.

Mr Odinga and Mr Kibaki signed a power-sharing agreement, brokered by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in the capital, Nairobi, on Thursday. Negotiations between the government and opposition lasted more than a month, stalling several times.

Relief
Mr Odinga told the BBC he wanted fresh elections within two years. He said the deal he signed with Mr Kibaki gave him genuine powers as prime minister, and there was agreement to fast-track amendments to the constitution so that he could take up office as soon as possible. The Root: He’s Black and We’re Proud

Thursday Feb 28, 2008 – By Clutch

black-fist-homepageimagecomponent.jpgBy Michael Dawson
It is supremely ironic that Barack Obama, the candidate who seeks to bury race as an issue in this campaign season, owes his overwhelming support among blacks to the continued power of black nationalism. For a century and a half, black nationalism has provided the main ideological challenge to the liberal, social democratic sensibilities that have always dominated black politics.

It is likely that Senator Obama’s support among African Americans would have remained divided without the continued ideological influence of black nationalism.

First, we need some definitions. To start, let’s define black nationalism. Black nationalism is the political ideology which takes race as the fundamental dividing line in the U.S. Black nationalists believe that the first political, cultural, economic, and/or social priority is for black people to come together. Further, Black nationalism calls for various degrees of political, economic, cultural and/or social separation from white people. Race becomes a primary determinant for making political judgments.

Black nationalism is not equivalent to black solidarity. While black nationalists call for black solidarity, black people coming togther to defend each other and engage in collective action, so do black activists of other ideologies. Black liberals such as Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Martin Luther King, Jr., all called for black people to come together to struggle for justice but were not black nationalists. (Continue Reading…)

Politics As Usual: Ohio Presidential Primary Debate Recap

Wednesday Feb 27, 2008 – By Clutch

artdebatestandinggi.jpgClinton, Obama clash over campaign tactics in debate
Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama sparred with each other over negative campaigning, health care and free trade Tuesday, a week before key primaries in Texas and Ohio. Those contests are must-wins for Clinton if she is to continue to contest Obama for the nomination, as even former President Clinton suggests. Debating at Cleveland State University, Clinton repeated angry claims from the campaign trail that Obama mischaracterized her stances on health care and NAFTA in political material mailed to voters in Ohio.

“I have a great deal of respect for Sen. Obama, but we have differences,” she said. “In the last several days, some of those differences in tactics and choices that Sen. Obama’s campaign has made regarding fliers and mailers and other information that has been put out … have been very disturbing to me.”

The mailers, which Obama defends, claim that Clinton’s health care plan would force people who don’t want insurance to buy it. They also say she has been inconsistent on NAFTA, which many in industrial states like Ohio blame for shipping blue-collar jobs overseas. (Continue Reading…)

Obama slammed by speakers at McCain rally

Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 – By Clutch

36101619.jpgIn a possible foreshadowing of a potentially bruising general election campaign, a speaker who introduced presidential candidate John McCain at a rally here today accused Barack Obama of sympathizing with “world leaders who want to kill us” and invoked Obama’s middle name — three times calling him “Barack Hussein Obama.”

Local conservative radio talk show host Bill Cunningham described Obama as “a hack Chicago Daley-style politician who is picturing himself as change. When he gets done with you — all you’re going to have in your pocket is change,” he said. McCain quickly distanced himself from the remarks, which he did not hear, saying that using Obama’s middle name in repetition like that was inappropriate. “I absolutely repudiate such comments and again, I will take responsibility,” he said, calling the use of Obama’s middle name inappropriate. “It will never happen again. It will never happen again.”

Cunningham, warming up a crowd of about 400 people in the ornate green and gold Hamilton County Memorial Hall before McCain’s arrival, accused the “stooges from the New York Times” and “sycophants in the media” of conspiring to elect Obama.

“At some point in the near future the media … is going to peel the bark off Barack Hussein Obama,” he said. “At some point the media will quit taking sides in this thing and maybe start covering Barack Hussein Obama the same way they cover Bush, the same way they cover Cheney, and same way they cover every Republican.”

Photo of Obama causes stir on Internet

Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 – By Clutch

080224-obamaphoto-vmed-11awidec.jpg A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama’s estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by “Clinton staffers” and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.
