Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings announced her retirement today through a live news release within minutes after Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury and resigned from office. Her retirement is immediately effective according to a written statement by her spokesman, James Tate. Bully-Cummings has offered to assist her successor with transitioning if she is asked to do so. She served 31 years on the Detroit Police Department and was the first female police chief of Detroit.
