London-based Nigerian rapper, Abdul Rasheed Bello also known as JJC, embraces the African diaspora in his recent released music video for his single, “We Are African.” Regardless the color of your passport, JJC claims that if you’re black you’re African. In fact, later in the video, he seems to make concessions to our honorary brothers and sisters at the lower ends of the melanin spectrum. Such lyrics defy the prejudices we oftentimes hold against other members of the black diaspora. Bello, through infectious beats rooted in both hip-hop and Afro-Caribbean elements, seeks to unite the diverse black race through music. “We are African,” claims Bello, serves as an anthem, a testament that despite our differences, we can all still march under one African banner.
