Model Selita Ebanks is the talk-of-the-town these days, experiencing a whirlwind of positive feedback and praise after her performance in Kanye’s short film, “Runaway.” But things weren’t always so sweet for the Victoria’s Secret beauty. In a recent interview for MTV, Selita discusses her humble beginnings as a model, and not-so-pleasant memory of being rejected by Vogue.

“I wore Timberland boots,” she tells Sway of MTV. “I had on corduroy high-water flooded beige pants with a button-down plaid shirt. I was a tomboy . . . I remember walking in . . . Trudy, from Vogue at the time, she looks at me startled and I didn’t understand why. I was like, ‘What up? Who am I here to meet?’ ”

Selita continues to tell how she was told to take off her jacket and simply be herself, while being pushed into another room. “I walk into the office, I got maybe two steps into the room and I look and it’s amazing Ms. Anna Wintour. She goes [makes a dismissive wave a la “The Devil Wear Prada”] and dismisses me,” Ebanks remembers. “Needless to say my cover did not come out, to say the least, and I have never shot Vogue magazine.”

While laughing in retrospect, Selita explains that the experience was a humbling one that taught her some valuable lessons about the industry and being prepared. She advises young women to always do their research and know exactly what you’re getting into: “Always be aware, don’t just take people’s word for it and walk into a room. . . . I should’ve asked, ‘Who am I here to see? Who will be in the room?’ But this is something you live and you learn.” Cute Story!

  • What I like about this story is that it proves that race isn’t always a factor on who gets photographed for vogue “inside the magazine or the cover”. Selita clearly did not dress the part or look the part when she went into Anna’s office and I love the advice that she gave because it can be applied to any field

I’ve always found her to be underwhelming as a model. She isn’t really high fashion material either. So I’d never expect to see her in any Vogue. She should really thank Kanye. Kanye really knows how to boost a girls profile lol

Thats why its so important to dress and act appropriately at all times. No matter what the industr she knew she was on a job interview. It didnt matter who was in the room. If she had dressed and spoke professionally she would have had a much better shot.

I know her personally. And I grew up with her….I know for a FACT that she probably did have that outfit on, but she did not go up in there saying “What up..who am i here to meet…” she doesnt/never spoke like that..I am happy to see how sucessful she became…but, telling the truth was never her forte..
