El DeBarge has been making a mean comeback lately, performing everywhere from The View to the BET Awards. His new single, “Lay With You” with Faith Evans has been climbing the charts, and everyone has been hailing DeBarge for his near impossible comeback. But it seems like his return to stardom will have to wait.
El DeBarge recently released a statement to his fans explaining why he decided to check himself into rehab.
“I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone. I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time.”
El DeBarge has admittedly struggled with drug abuse for several years. He was arrested in 2001, 2006, and 2008 for drug possession and in 2007 for a domestic dispute. He was even sentenced to two years in prison after his last arrest, where he said he kicked the drug habit and recommitted his life to God. After his release in 2009, DeBarge had been working overtime trying to reclaim his place in the music industry.
In a strange twist, Black Voices is reporting that rapper 50 Cent “played a significant part in helping get the singer into a recovery facility.”
Until further notice, all of El DeBarge’s performances have been canceled indefinitely. He was scheduled to appear on Kem’s “Intimacy Tour” with Ledisi later this month.
El DeBarge is not only a singer, he is a musical institution and has had a profound influence on many.
We wish him a speedy recovery!
