The Heart Truth

On Thursday, all eyes will be on New York for the start of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! We are looking forward to a week of style from some of the fashion industry’s most talented designers. But, before things kick off at the Lincoln Center*, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) — along with partnering organizations — is hosting the annual Red Dress Collections show in support of The Heart Truth. For the the eighth year in a row, celebrity models will strut in various red designer dresses. This year’s roster includes Dania Ramirez, Eve, Garcelle Beauvais, Gayle King, Patti LaBelle, and Taraji P. Henson.

Encouraging women to protect their heart health, The Heart Truth campaign seeks to educate about heart disease and provide information to help take action against its risks. The Red Dress is the center of the initiative and serves as an alarming symbol to remind women about the importance of monitoring their heart.

At C+C, we challenge you to be more conscious of your heart health. We challenge you to educate not only yourself, but your grandmother, mother, sister, and friends!

Take note of these heart wrenching statistics:

  • Black women affected by heart disease have a higher mortality rate than white women and black men under the age of 55
  • The mortality rate from coronary heart disease is 69-percent higher for black women than white women
  • The first heart attack occurs at an earlier age in black women and is more likely to be fatal than is the case in white women
