It’s official, the best shows featuring Black people are not on BET, TVOne, NBC, or any other TV channel. The best shows featuring interesting Black characters are on the web.

Over the weekend, while perusing Shadow & Act and getting my film fix, I stumbled on the gem, “The Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl” a new webseries staring Issa Rae, a woman who has taken it in her hands to tell her own story.

According to Rae’s site, AwkwardBlackGirl.com, the series, “‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ follows the title character and friends as she navigates through life, love and awkward situations.”

One look at the trailers and the first episode, and I was hooked. The first installment of “Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl,” deals with what I’m sure many of us can relate to, how to shake a bugaboo, you know a man (or woman) who’s more into you than you are into them. Watching Rae’s character flip from a ‘hood rap slinger to an ultra-conservative business woman was not only hilarious, but also relatable.

In times like these, when TV shows and films featuring interesting Black characters are missing from most mainstream outlets, it’s nice to see that many (and I do mean many) are taking matters into their own hands and making their own way.
