Back in 2008, while many were hailing the election of America’s first non-White president, some were wondering if President Obama’s victory meant we were finally entering a “post-racial” America.
Well, nearly three years and about a jillion Tea Partiers, birthers, and nut jobs later we know that the Post-Racial Promised Land is no where in sight.
Despite new census data saying that America is becoming more diverse, some still seem to cling to old and outdated notions of racism. Just this past weekend news broke of an Orange County Republican Party Committee member, Marilyn Davenport, who forwarded an email that depicted the President as a monkey. Although many of her Republican peers are repulsed by the image, Davenport was defiant brushing it off as a bad joke.
Sadly, things like this happen every day. Despite our best efforts, racism, sexism, homophobia, and other prejudices continue to plague our society. But will this always be the case?
As we move toward a more diverse, inclusive society could we see the end of the isms?
What do you think Clutchettes and Gents…will racism, sexism, and other isms every go away?
Let’s talk about it!
