For Washington’s political crowd, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a “can’t miss” event. And with a sense of humor that far outshines his predecessors, President Obama picked up this year’s dinner where he left off in 2010.
Last year, the President quipped about the birther opposition saying, “I happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth.”
And while his approval numbers may have gone down since then, that didn’t mean the President was out of jokes. Taking the podium, Saturday night, President Obama re-addressed the birthers and cracked another round of jokes at their behalf.
Addressing the rumors about his place of birth, President Obama said he was prepared to show a clip from his “official birth video.” He then ran the opening moments of Disney’s The Lion King, gaining a good laugh from the crowd.
Oddly enough, as the President took on the birthers, their new self-appointed leader was seated right in the audience. Donald Trump made himself comedic bait for both President Obama and SNL Head Writer, Seth Myers, who hosted the event.
Saying that the release of his long form birth certificate should end Trump’s months long quest, President Obama suggested that the reality TV host was now free to figure our whether the moon landing actually happened as well as answer the mystery, “where are Biggie and Tupac?”
While Trump good-naturedly laughed along with Obama’s jokes, he was less amused by Myers’ skewering routine. Starting out Myers quipped:
“Donald Trump often talks about running as a Republican, which is surprising. I just assumed he was running as a joke.”
Given the timing of the event, is interesting to think that President was juggling news of the special action to kill Osama Bin Laden when prepping for the Correspondent’s dinner. Regardless of what your politics, you have to admit this is one hell of a study in political theatre.
