It is hard to believe that ten years has passed since we first listened to Alicia Keys’ debut CD, Songs In A Minor. Time surely does fly and with its passing, Alicia has won Grammys, sailed to the top of the Billboard charts, become a mother and a wife and so much more.
W Magazine is honoring her in its June 2011 issue in the feature, “Major Keys”. In it, she discusses her humble beginnings and always wanting to remain authentic and true to herself: “I just wanted to be who I was, which was like so many other girls I knew. We grew up in the city, had a hard edge and obstacles to overcome, but we were still young and beautiful. I didn’t want to be all dressed up, all made up—I wanted to be myself, which hadn’t been done before.”
To commemorate the ten year anniversary of Songs In A Minor, Alicia has put together a deluxe edition CD, featuring alternate takes of the album’s songs, demos, live recordings and a cover of “Light My Fire”. When the CD debuted in 2001, it came in on the charts at No. 1 and went on to sell 11 million copies. We have a feeling that her new spin on it will prove to be successful in its own right.
As for fashion and beauty, Alicia is completely fierce in the feature. In the image above, she is wearing a wool jacket from Alexander McQueen, a ring from Versace and a hat from Ellen Christine. The beauty theme is dark and fierce with rich red lips, smoky eyes and dark red polish. Something that we can all mimic for our nights out.
