Though jazz singer/bassist Esperanza Spalding has been on the scene for quite sometime, her gorgeous face framed by that huge ‘fro didn’t become more mainstream until she won a Grammy as The Best New Artist this year.
Esperanza grew up in Portland, Oregon, in a not-so-nice neighborhood. After a stay bullet killed the child, she began sleeping on the floor. TV was her way of escaping from a harsh reality and an episode of on Mister Roger’s Neighborhood featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma inspired her to try her hand at musical instruments. It wasn’t long before she mastered the oboe, clarinet and violin. While in college, she performed as a singer and bassist and now she has three albums under her belt and a prestigious Grammy award.
Now with her face in glossies like InStyle magazine, it’s clear she’s as beautiful as she is talented. The way the she proudly rocks natural hair and barely-there makeup is a breath of fresh air. Her bold brows make us want to never touch a pair tweezers again.
Esperanza feels her hair is just an extension of her: “Embracing and freely wearing my natural hair is like a form of self- exploration. I’m not White, I’m not European, and my hair is not straight. So I don’t have any desire to make it straight– it doesn’t speak to who I am as a person. I am very mixed and I like that my hair is a reflection of that. My hair is an extension of me, and that’s how it should be,” she said in an interview with Curly Nikki.
