Thursday kicked off this year’s Full-Figured Fashion Week (FFFW). It’s the third year of the three day presentation that celebrates women’s fashion for those over a size 12.

The brainchild of Gwen Devoe, Full-Figured Fashion Week was a huge success last year and if the sold out events this year are any indication, the popularity of this event will only increase in the future. The message is clear: women of all sizes want to see a reflection of themselves on the runway.

“It’s been crazy,” Devoe told the New York Daily News. “It’s just exploding. Women are finally getting a chance to see fashion come alive on models with bodies they can relate to.” Women will also be able to see stores come alive with clothing that they actually want to wear. “Plus-size women in America want fashionable, well-made clothes,” said Devoe. “We have money to spend. And we’re happy to give it to the designers and stores who help us celebrate our curves.”

There will be sample sales, trunk shows and a shopping crawl showing off what New York City has to offer plus-sized shoppers. The success of FFFW is a breath of fresh air in an industry that still shuns women bigger than a size 2.  Our hope is that the next FFFW will be even longer and the organizers may not have a choice but to comply; the event is practically sold out already and there are over 1,000 guests expected for the finale show.
