The women of Full Figured Fashion Week (FFFW), a three-day presentation that celebrates women’s fashion for those over a size 12, came, saw and conquered New York City with Marie Denee leading the way. The Curvy Fashionista was not only part of the production team that brought FFFW to fruition but hosted a sold-out shopping extravaganza for lucky plus-sized shoppers.
But be clear: FFFW is more than just fashion. According to Marie, FFFW is a movement to empower, celebrate, challenge and inspire the full-figured woman to redefine plus size fashion- from the inside out!
We caught up with Marie in the aftermath of Full Figured Fashion Week to get her take on how everything went down.
Coco+Creme: Tell us a bit about the tone of the week.
Marie Denee: The tone was pure excitement, elation, and anticipation from all participants that I encountered. For some, it was a reunion. For others, there were tons of new introductions. And of course, there was great fashion to be admired! I loved everything! Seeing it all come together made me excited to be a plus-sized woman who could embrace fashion confidently and excitedly!
C+C: How was your shopping crawl? What perks did your plus-size shoppers enjoy?
MD: The Fashion Crawl was so much fun! Libations and the idea of being catered to and driven around town in style lifted spirits,! I literally was crawling back! We had a stellar blast at Re/Dress and got expert fittings at Lane Bryant while shopping stellar deals during the Semi- Annual Sale! Every place had an exclusive deal just for us, so we shopped, sipped, and saved!
C+C: Now, about that amazing finale! How did you all come up with the concept? What designers blew you away?
Marie: I was pleasantly and QUITE surprised by a few designers! I loved the diversity in age, size, and style! There was literally something for every curvy fashionista! From boardroom to bedroom, office to cocktail, you could see yourself in a few outfits to match your lifestyle. I have a few favorites in Marina Zelner and Curvysta and Margaux Couture!
C+C: Was there one defining moment that stood out to you during FFFWeek? Are there any hopes that you have for next year’s FFFWeek?
Marie: The boat cruise! Wearing white as a plus-size woman carries so many taboos and fears- yet these women stepped out, shed all insecurities, and owned their curves! This was the perfect setting to step out in a beautiful direction for this year’s FFFWeek! For next year, if anything, I would love to continue to see NEW designers step up, create, and innovate fashion for the plus-size woman!
C+C: What do you think it will take for more mainstream designers to embrace curvy fashionistas?
Marie: I think events like this that bring plus-size women and fashion together in an elegant, professional and forward manner will only continue to encourage those who move with hesitation. When they see plus-size women strutting in high style, I think the barriers or stereotypes will dissolve! It is already a given that the plus size fashion market has generous room for development and that the’re money to be made. BUT as the mainstream realizes plus-size women will support those who cater to us, they’ll invest in us. When it comes to full-figured fashion, happiness can be had on both side of the clothing aisle.
