Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart and Comedian Larry Wilmore discussed the branding of the so-called “Obama Downgrade.” Wilmore, the show’s Senior Black Correspondent (a title given to him in jest of cable network’s topic selected African-American anchors) started his bit by expressing his discontent that the media was attributing the S&P downgrade of the United States from AAA to AA+, despite most of the initial economic damage occurring under George W. Bush. Sighing aloud, Wilmore exclaimed:
“America finally gets its first black president and our credit goes bad.”
Wilmore pointed out that the right has long tried to use ridiculous stereotypes to drag down Obama’s presidency. He even referenced Fox Nation’s absurd “Hip Hop BBQ” piece. From there Wilmore and Stewart bantered about what President Obama’s next move and while Stewart suggest President Obama get in front of the stereotyping, Wilmore offered up his own advice: go blacker.
While some were offended by Wilmore’s bit, it is worth pointing out that he is a comedian and regularly does tongue in cheek bits on The Daily Show. Still, is telling the President to wear his pants sagging crossing the line or is it all in good fun?
