Last night the boxing world lost a legend. Former heavyweight champ Smokin’ Joe Frazier succumbed to liver cancer at the age of 67.
Known for his devastating punching power and his storied boxing matches with Muhammad Ali, Frazier was diagnosed with cancer just last month.
His family released a brief statement last night saying, “We The Family of … Smokin’ Joe Frazier, regret to inform you of his passing. He transitioned from this life as ‘One of God’s Men,’ on the eve of November 7, 2011 at his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.”
Fraizer’s fans and legendary foes expressed their condolences. Muhammad Ali released a statement about his famous opponent, saying, the “world has lost a great champion.
Ali continued, “I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration. My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones.”
Despite his fame Frazier experienced some financial hardships throughout the years. Boxer Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has offered to pay for Frazier’s funeral.
Mayweather tweeted, “My condolences go out to the family of the late great Joe Frazier. #TheMoneyTeam will pay for his funeral services.”
Joe Frazier may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
