A Cincinnati landlord posted a sign saying “Public Pool: Whites Only” to discourage the teenage daughter of her tenants from using the apartment complex pool. The parents filed a discrimination charge with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and Jamie Hein, a white woman, was found to have violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act by posting the sign, which they concluded “restricts the social interaction between Caucasians and African-Americans and reinforces discriminatory actions aimed at oppressing people of color.”
Ms. Hein feels justified in posting the sign, indicating that she did so because “the girl used in her hair chemicals that would make the pool ‘cloudy.'” She plans to fight the ruling, which will spare her from the next steps of facing an Ohio administrative court that could order her to remove the sign or pay punitive damages.
The family has since moved out of the complex to “avoid subjecting their family to further humiliating treatment.”
