The Hollywood Foreign Press announced nominees for the 69th annual Golden Globes today and The Help is among the most-nominated productions of the year with five. These nominations include Best Dramatic Motion Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nods for Viola Davis and Olivia Spencer, respectively, and a Best Original Song nomination for Mary J. Blige for the film’s theme “Living Proof.” Idris Elba is up for a Best Performance award for his role in the BBC mini-series Luther.

The French romance film The Artist led all nominations with six nods, including best motion picture, comedy or musical. Other heavily nominated films include George Clooney’s comedy/drama The Descendents with five nominations, and Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, and even more Clooney in The Ides of March each earning four.

    I don’t watch these shows particularly when we are awarded a nomination. Why? Because it’s usually in a role stereotype. Halle Berry (Sapphire stereotype) and Denzel Washington (Drug Dealer); need I say more? And now Viola Davis for her role as a maid (Mammy stereotype).

    However Idris’s nomination is so normal…it really makes me smile. Now if only black americans could follow suit and refuse these types of roles. If Idris can do, why can’t american black actors and actresses??
