Spoken word artist Jefferson Bethke’s video “Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus,” was posted on January 10 but already has over five million views.

His message, more or less, is that without a personal relationship with God, religion is pretty meaningless and just a list of “chores.” He also covers the discrepancies between the Bible and the behavior of those who claim to follow it with lines like, “Now let me clarify, I love the church, I love the bible, and yes I believe in sin/But if Jesus came to your church would they actually let him in?” Watch:

Anyone who openly criticizes religion will ruffle a few feathers, but many of the video’s detractors argue that practicing Christianity is necessary to have true love for Jesus. Those who love what Bethke has to say applaud him for boldly speaking out against the hypocrisy of an institution that they feel often interferes with their personal relationships with God.

Finally, someone has expressed something I have often wondered about; religion, mainly because there are so many of them.
I totally agree that religion has always been the basis of all wars and killing of so many people over the centuries. I believe, you believe, we believe, and so becomes a ‘religion’, manifested in everything counter to all other beliefs. And what do we do, we create wars to support what ‘we’ believe in.
I have always believed in God, the Father and the Son and will continue to do so. As I now have another who believes the same as I.

Great words overall, but the bible was written by religious men…
