Oprah Winfrey’s OWN has made good on its new strategy of paying more attention to the needs of black audiences; the network successfully aired its Roots reunion, a great start in establishing it as a home for unique African-American content. Oprah’s OWN Documentary club has acquired the rights to Family Affair a 2010 Sundance Film Festival entry that only had limited release in theaters but has a serious story to tell.

Filmmaker Chico Colvard returns to his childhood home to document the growth and healing (or perhaps lack of both) in his family years after a life-altering incident. We learn that at the age of nine he accidentally shot his sister and she, believing that she would die, confessed that their father had been sexually abusing both her and her sisters.

The extended trailer is very thought-provoking and has me really looking forward to watching the whole documentary. Family Affair will air on OWN on March 1.

Hat tip to Shadow & Act.

This is so heartbreaking; predators living right in the home. I am curious to know how and when the mother left and who did she leave her children with.

nOT ENTERTAINING, NOR A TEACHABLE MOMENT!

      Why not a “teachable” moment?

I don’t think it’s supposed to be entertaining. It can, however, give others the courage to confront their own family issues. You would be surprised at how many families are like this one.

    Wow this is..pivotal.

    I’ll try to catch it.

How about this……why would you buy the rights to a documentary that has the potential to help so many then keep it on the shelf??? Seems very self-serving and selfish to me. I am fed up with Ophra doing this. I first learned of this documentary several years ago and every attempt either purchase it or watch it on line is met with, “OWN” has the rights and it would be released eventually. What the????
REALLY OPRAH???? Just Selfish!!!! I am not interested in just a trailer, I would like to watch the entire documentary! Sheeeeeeze!!!!!! Is it necessary for you to OWN
