Watching the last two episodes of Styled by June on VH1, I was amazed at how difficult it was for Mischa Barton and Trina to surrender themselves to the magic of June Ambrose. Despite saying they wanted a complete makeover, when it came down to totally altering their style the experience was much more emotional than they would have imagined.

Most of us don’t randomly make ourselves over from head to toe but there are times we may want to switch up our hair or try a seasonal trend but we scare ourselves into thinking we won’t look right and we don’t end up taking the leap at all. As scary as it may be to let go of our signatures looks and try something new, experimenting with different styles may actually reveal a side we never knew we had, making the experience well worth it. Here are a few tips to make your style transformation as painless as possible.

What’s Your Motivation?

Are you trying to impress someone, does your job depend on you toning down or spicing up your wardrobe, are you just stuck in a rut? The easiest way to feel better about trying something new is to figure out why you’re doing it. Trina wanted a new look to correlate with her new pop music style but she also wanted to get rid of the super sexed-up image she’s always had. As difficult as it was for her to break out of booty-hugging dresses and cleavage-baring shirts, she knew the move was necessary to change the way people view her and how she views herself. Think about what your style currently says and what you want it to say, then adjust accordingly.

I am in the process of transitioning with my wardrobe. I’ve always had ideas in my head of what I’d like to wear, but would never purchase a piece. I kept it simple with a little bit of spunk. But now that I am more sure of who I am as a person, and what my personal style is I am ready to throw caution to the wind and be creative with my style, because that is who I have become.
