Basketball Wives cast member Tami Roman has a mild heart attack on Monday, March 26, and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles for treatment. Her publicist released a statement “to let her fans and supporters know she is doing fine and looks forward to resuming her scheduled engagements.” and that “she will also be back on twitter communicating with her followers shortly.” There, Roman tweeted thanks for the support, told the negative people to get lives, and lamented: “Never thought I’d have a mild heart attack at 41. God has a way of bringing things into perspective. Finally going home 2my kids-heart meds and all.”
A heart attack at 41. That is scary, and something that I’m sure few of us have considered could ever happen to us.
It’s not worthwhile to speculate about what caused a woman so young to have a cardiac event; while those who’ve been keeping up with Tami’s 20+ years of stirring up drama on television will probably blame her high-stress lifestyle, none of us know anything about her family history or other factors that could lead to an early heart attack. Regardless of the root cause, we can only hope that Tami will have a speedy recovery and monitor her health moving forward (and a reduced stress lifestyle will probably and hopefully be part of that). But Tami’s situation is one that all black women can learn a lot from. This is a seemingly fit career woman and mother of two teenage children who would assume that she’s in the clear when it comes to the health problems of the aged or obese, but she isn’t. The fact is that any young black woman — under the spotlight of cameras every day or not — could have a heart attack with no foreshadowing. Tami’s hardship should serve as a reminder for all of us to take care of ourselves!
