After being the talk of  the internet last week for his film and charity Invisible Children, Jason Russell is once again garnering  headlines. Only this time, it’s not for shining a spotlight on a war criminal.

According to the San Diego Police Department, Russell was detained Thursday for public drunkenness and masturbation.

NBC San Diego reports:

Jason Russell, 33,  was allegedly found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of something, according to SDPD. He was detained at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Road.

SDPD said Russell was acting very strange.

“Due to the nature of the detention, he was not arrested,” a police spokesperson said at a press conference. “During the evaluation we learned we probably needed to take him to a medical facility because of statements he was saying.”

Police said they received several calls Thursday at 11:30 a.m. of a man in various stages of undress, running through traffic and screaming.

When police arrived, Russell was in his underwear. Because of his bazaar behavior, police felt the best course of action was to take Russell to the hospital instead of arrest him.

Invisible Children issued a statement on Friday saying Russell had been hospitalized for exhaustion, dehydration, and was receiving treatment.

This movement should survive if it was about the Uganda people and not him. This is a test for the supporters of the movement.

I am very much against the Kony 2012 campaign, but can’t help but feel very sad for him–if this is true, there’s not doubt that this must be a difficult time for him. I also feel afraid that vilifying him may reduce people’s criticisms about the campaign to his personal flaws instead of keeping the spotlight on the real ethical and political issues of the campaign.
