Walking in any Target store or neighborhood beauty supply, you’re likely to come across a new black hair care line every time you shop. Companies are finally listening to the hair care woes of black women and creating specific lines to help us maintain whatever styles we choose—and as an added bonus to fabulous hair we also get to buy black.

For the past month I’ve been working out at least five days a week, and trying more products than my wallet would like in a search for the perfect line to maintain my hair. It’s been tough to find a product that gives me enough hold without my hair being too crunchy, frizzy, dry, poufy, weighed down, etc. etc, but a couple of weeks ago I brought my search to an end when I stumbled across Beautiful Textures. The line, which launched in December, is geared toward women with mixed textures—curly, wavy, kinky-coily, frizzy—which is good for me with several months of new growth and straighter ends.

So far, I’ve only used the Curl Control Defining Pudding and the Moisture Butter Whipped Curl Crème but the full line includes a tangle taming shampoo and conditioner, repair deep conditioner, shine serum, and a curly to straight cream to use before flat ironing. For me, the crème/pudding duo gives me the perfect amount of hold and softness, whether I use the product to set my hair with twists or just scrunch and go. While they lack the amount of shine I’d like, compared to other products I’ve tried, I’m perfectly fine sticking with these options and adding shine serum on top. Plus, the items are reasonably priced which is rare with new collections but important when you’re using a lot of product on a daily basis. Since I know we’ve got some hair care mavens out there, I’m curious what black hair care lines you ladies have found work best for your hair.

What’s your favorite black hair care brand and what do you like about it?
