Gleeks got a bit of tough news yesterday when Amber Riley tweeted that she had closed a chapter in her life and is moving on from Glee.

After three years of belting out some of music’s most famous tunes, the actress is trading in her high school duds and moving on up to the big leagues.

Riley tweeted:

“That’s a wrap on Amber Riley! Just closed a chapter in my life, the only thing I’ve known day in and day out for three years. I’m going to miss the whole Glee family, seeing them everyday! I have so many brothers and sisters now :) But I am looking forward to a much needed and deserved summer vacation! SCHOOL’S OUT Glee Kids! Let’s play!”

Although Riley’s tweet seemed to indicate that her time on the musical comedy has come to an end, she left fans a brief opening, telling them, “Stay tuned to see what’s next for Mercedes ;)”

So is she leaving or what?

While I’m not sure if this marks the end of Riley’s tenure on the popular show, I think her exit from Glee while the show is still popular is a good move. There’s nothing worse than jumping from a sinking ship, and Riley had made a name for herself as a good actress and powerful singer and her departure is a good move for a few reasons.

Sidestepping typecasting: Actors who play a particular role long enough run the risk of always being associated with that role.  See Steve Urkel, Vanessa Huxtable, and Arnold Jackson as examples.

More freedom: Taping a TV show is extremely time consuming and leaves an actor little time to pursue other projects. Because its based in a high school, Riley couldn’t stay on Glee forever so leaving now will allow her time to pursue other film, stage, and TV roles.

What do you think about Amber Riley’s departure from ‘Glee’? Is it a good move?

I think she should have considered staying but branching her charcter out. They didn’t give her the attention she deserved as out the top as her character was……Good luck girl!

Good! Glee provided Amber with great exposure but she’s a pretty girl with a huge beautiful voice. I was getting tired of Mercedes under-developed character, ghetto fab clothing, and her only getting singing time at the end of a song or just on R&B/soul/gospel songs. I wish her the best of luck!

I only watched the show for Santana, Puck, Artie and Mercedes but I’ve also stopped watching. Glee really has jumped the shark and it’s not even interesting or as funny as it used to be anymore. I’m just thinking to myself why I even bothered watching it. I did like the camera angles and the cinematography. But the show was just taking too long and was moving really slow. One minute Rachel and Finn are together, then they break up, get together, break up, get together. It’s just exhausting to keep up with who’s dating who now and who’s gay this week, who’s a lesbian this week, when is Artie going to get some lovin? Plus the sexual undertones was getting cliche like, look, I’m tired of seeing all this sex and crap, can you please get on with the singing and the musicals? I wanted it to be like HSM but better and it was, but then it just fell off and started to look more like the new Degrassi…which sucks too by the way lol.

I was wishing and hoping that Mercedes could have a long lasting relationship with the fish lip dude ( I don’t even remember his character or why they broke up) but since she was going back and forth and didn’t stay with him, I just turned the TV off and listened to music. I wanted Mercedes to have a boyfriend who loved her, for her to be passionate about something. For her to stand out, not only her voice, but her confidence, her fulfilling her dreams, joining some type of sports program, you know something instead of being boring black girl Mercedes that’s sassy and has a big voice.
