When you listen to songs today you notice that outside of catchy beats and hooks, music has lost its soul. Gone is the real passion, the depth, the individuality, creativity…the artistry. But every once in awhile someone steps on the scene and takes you by surprise. Like a diamond in the rough, they engulf you in their sound and return to music what was once lost. That someone is Emeli Sandé.

The British songstress may only be 24-years-old, but she belts out tunes with a classic soul styling reminiscent of Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Lauryn Hill. Her big break came when she was a teenager, but it wasn’t until 2010, after completing nearly four years of medical school, that Emeli decided to pursue her passion full time and she hasn’t looked back since. Simon Cowell called her “his favourite songwriter at the minute” after hearing the hits Emeli has penned for a number of artists, including Cher Lloyd, Susan Boyle, Preeya Kalidas, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, and Tinie Tempah. Her debut album Our Version of Events, showcases her towering talent especially on tracks like the strings-drenched “Daddy” and the hypnotic “Heaven.” In fact, the entire album has a retro-futurist feel, rife with raw emotion and loads of soul.

Outside of her musical talents Emeli Sandé has become something of a rising fashion icon. Her eclectic style is one all her own and the singer lives to be just as unique with her fashion as she is with her music. Emeli’s style is so eye-catching that even the legendary Madonna has taken a moment to stan over her hair and the Scottish Fashion Awards have nominated Emeli for their ‘Fashion Icon Award’ this year.

Beauty, brains, fashion sense and a voice like silk are just a few of the reasons why we love Emeli Sandé and after a few listens…you’ll love her too!

She is my musical crush. (Pause.) Whenever I feel like someone speaks for my emotions lyrically AND are talented AND make amazing tracks on top of that, I feel like that person is my “musical twin”. lol But she’s not only a phenomenal artist; she seems like an awesome person as well. She’s pursuing her medical education WHILE being a world-touring musician and singer! Gotta respect that!

My favorite song from her right now is “Kill The Boy”. *chills*
