Remember all those people wondering whether or not Queen Latifah’s performance at the Long Beach Pride Festival meant that she was finally coming out of the closet? While we didn’t think it mattered what she decided to do, the Queen recently weighed in on all of the talk about her sexuality and she had a resounding answer for folks who just can’t seem to let the issue go: “It’s just not gonna happen.”
Latifah recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about why she decided to participate in the Pride festival.
“To me, doing a gay pride show is one of the most fun things,” she explained. “My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco. Tupac happened to be in town, so he came to kick it with me. This was the early ’90s. And the boys were like, ‘Take your shirt off, Tupac!’ He wasn’t doing that. But we had a blast in there.”
The Queen has a lot of love for her LGBT fans. She’s supported LGBT causes and loves to perform for diverse crowds. Latifah encourages them to continue to share their light with the world, in spite of bullies and haters that try to break them down.
“I know that the most important thing and the only thing I have to give is love. When people are going through hatred and bullying, the biggest thing to fight that is love,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “So that’s all I encouraged my audience to do that night: to share their light and share their love. Period.”
But just in case you had any doubts that Queen Latifah was going to publicly come out at a later date, she made sure to remind folks that her private life is not up for discussion.
“I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”
