Raise your hand if you applied any makeup before hitting the gym. Embarrassingly, I have to raise mine. Before stepping foot on the treadmill, I apply a dab of lip balm and make sure I have on a pair of earrings. I refuse to leave the house without the two. And it seems I’m not alone. A recent poll shows 7 out of 10 women admit they apply makeup before going to work out.

The poll also reveals mascara is the most popular workout wonder with two out of five women admitting they apply mascara to their lashes before doing any form of exercise in public. Foundation comes in second and lipgloss comes in third.

With pictures of Lala, Kelly Rowland and other celebrities going to the gym all dolled up, many women feel pressure to look good even at the gym. Not to mention the fact that some ladies see it as a viable place to meet men. For other women, looking their best gives them more motivation and confidence throughout their workout. And looking good means applying some form of makeup even if they’re going to sweat that mascara and foundation off as soon as they start to move.

If you must wear makeup to the gym, here are a few tips to still look great while breaking a sweat:

1. For your lips, try a moisturizing balm instead of lipstick.

2. Use a tinted moisturizer to even skin tone without risking a cakey look that can occur from sweating through foundation.

3. Use waterproof mascara.

4. Use a bandanna or a sweat band to help control your sweat. It will keep both your hair and sweat out of your eyes while you get your workout on.

For those of you that wear makeup, bring those wipes or cleanser to wash your face right after a workout. In fact, I always wash my face after a workout, because the sweat and salt on your skin can lead to dry patches or pimples if you aren’t careful (depends on whether your skin is oily or dry). Everyone should wash their face after a workout.

I usually workout right after work which means my face is already done when I get into the gym. Yes, when I sweat some of it comes off when I wipe with a towel, but I am not going to go home wash my “face” off to go to the gym to work out. I believe that I can look somewhat decent when working out! Do I have to look like I rolled my butt out of bed to prove to the world that I’m serious about exercise? On the weekends, if I decide to get a workout in while I’m home or if I head out the the park again, from home – – no makeup, just some chapstick.

  • I think it is not necessary to ware blush on makeups, instead I wore foundation… asian-makeup.org/

You will never see me outside of my house without makeup… and most likely you will not even know that I have on makeup. I use sheer Bare Minerals powder to cover dark undereyes and scars from eczema breakouts. That doesn’t have anything to do with LaLa and Kelly Rowland……

  • I always wear makeup to the gym and I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Sometimes (GASP!) I don’t pull my hair back either. I’m not looking for a date while I’m at the gym and I can even manage a good workout with makeup on. Maybe I’m a little high maintenance, but so what!
