Last month, when a writer questioned why BET wasn’t able to compete with VH1’s reality show ratings, she argued that they should jump on the reality TV bandwagon as well. While we had differing views, we both agreed that BET needed to step up its content if it was going to be the network many viewers wanted it to be. Well, it looks like BET might just have its first real hit on its hands.
Based on the wildly popular and “insanely funny” sketch during the 2011 BET Awards, The Real Husbands of Hollywood is BET’s first “(un)reality” show which will parody many of the Wives shows on-air today.
The scripted show will star Kevin Hart, Robin Thicke, Boris Kodjoe, J.B. Smoove, and Duane Martin. The sitcom will include both scripted and improvised moments, giving the men more room to let their comedic genius shine.
Over the past few years BET has been working hard to improve their content, adding more scripted shows to its line-up. Earlier this year the network rolled out its upcoming roster, which includes a mix of sitcoms, dramas, and films, including Ava DuVernay’s award-winning drama Middle of Nowhere.
If The Real House Husbands of Hollywood can recreate the magic it created during the BET awards, this show could be a major hit for the network.
