Rachel JeantelYou know those moments where you await a victory after being subjected to endless scrutiny. Well, such a moment came this morning for 19-year-old trial witness, Rachel Jeantel, during her radio appearance on the Tom Joyner Morning show.

Following last night’s Piers Morgan interview, the majority of us were up in arms after hearing Juror B37 say, in a blacked out interview with Anderson Cooper, that she felt sorry for the “uneducated” Jeantel.

Contrary to Juror B37’s opinion, Jeantel, who speaks three languages, exuded class, grace, and immense restraint in the face of trauma and disrespect. One of Jeantel’s biggest admirers, Tom Joyner, invited the high school teen to his morning show where he offered her a full scholarship to the HBCU of her choice.

“ Here’s my offer to you, if you want to graduate from high school and go to a HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters, Bethune Cookman or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that. I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like.”

The scholarship will be funded through the Tom Joyner Foundation. Her lawyer, Rod Vereen, accompanied Jeantel to the show, where he disclosed Rachel’s future plans to go into law enforcement or perhaps become a homicide investigator.

Jeantel, feel free to reactivate that twitter account for a few minutes to tweet, “screw the haters.”

Once she was in a non confrontational situation (CNN), she expressed herself with much thought and maturity for a 19yr old. She shouldn’t have been judged just by her diction on the stand. Many adult’s 20yrs her senior do not have any more composure – why should she be expected to? I didn’t see it as a short coming.

I applaud Tom Joyner for rallying to her side. I appreciate and love the fact that she is being offered the tools necessary to help her get to college so she can achieve her dreams. My only beef is is that he offered her a free ride to any HBCU of her choice. I’m not knocking HBCU’s by any means, but why set limits/conditions for her? Why not offer her the tools necessary to get to the college of HER choice and to pay for that tuition? If she were accepted to a non-HBCU, would Joyner’s Foundation refuse to pay? How does that do right by her? Why set limits on this intelligent young lady? Offering support with specific limits/conditions doesn’t seem right to me. If you truly believe in her potential, offer to pay for the necessary prep and tuition to HER school of choice.

For anyone to take issue with Rachel Jeantel being offered a free education is absolutely insane and incomprehensible. Racism/white supremacy is truly a weapon of mass mind destruction. It is clear that some of us can be redeemed from the effects of post slavery disorder and some of us have suffered irreparable damage. Tom Joyner has shown the example of how the village raises the child. He is to be commended for assisting this young lady and in such an enormous way and hopefully others will follow. Also, he clearly recognized that she has not yet finished high school (primarily due to the trial) and as others have mentioned, he offered to assist her in any way through tutors, etc. to get her up to speed to be able to attend college. However, that’s beside the point. Instead of being among the many people that attacked her, he chose to be among those that would help her. What a powerful, spiritually grounded, and mentally balanced way to respond.

We seriously need to learn and practice discernment when it comes to choosing our battles. In light of the blow that we were just dealt, our time and energy should be focused on pulling together so that we can uplift our communities and save our children from killers (black, white, etc. ) that are murdering our children in cold blood. How about we discuss that?

    Thank you.
