I guess it’s true, folks will buy just about anything.
Recently, Kanye West teamed up with French fashion house A.P.C. to design a limited menswear collection that had hipsters drooling over their lattes. Yeezy’s line, which consists of hoodies, jeans, and t-shirts, ranges in price from $120 to $280.
While West has always considered himself a tastemaker, and even designed a now-defunct collection that premiered at Paris Fashion Week a few seasons ago, many are calling this very minimalist line a way too overpriced.
Although $265 jeans are not a rare occurrence, some are taking umbrage with West’s $120 “hip hop t-shirt.”
The shirt, which is simply a plain, white tee (it also comes in black), is described on the A.P.C. website as, “Very loose T-shirt in Egyptian cotton. Short sleeves. Ribbing at neckline. Reinforced neckline and shoulders. ‘A.P.C. KANYE’ silkscreened inside neckline.”
So basically, it’s a white tee with Yeezy’s name on it.
While I think paying $120 for a t-shirt is ridiculous, it seems many others do not. According to Complex, when the collection debuted on A.P.C.’s website yesterday so many users logged on to snap up Yeezy’s threads the site crashed and most of the items sold out, including the infamous “hip hop t-shirt.”
A.P.C.’s Jean Touitou told Style.com that the collaboration with West was two years in the making because the rapper wanted each piece to fit into “the kingdom of dopeness.” Did it work?
