Shame on you Russell Simmons.

Shame on you Russell Simmons.

I guess nothing is sacred anymore.

All Def Digital (ADD), brainchild of media mogul Russell Simmons and Awesomeness TV CEO Brian Robbin, recently released a YouTube clip reimagining just how Mother Moses freed so many slaves.

In All Def Digital’s web series, ADD History: Harriet Tubman Sex Tape, YouTube comedians DeStorm Power, Shanna Malcolm, and Jason Horton offer their “outlandish and irreverent” take on “the off-record account of how Harriet Tubman blackmailed her master into letting her run the Underground Railroad!”

During the “reenactment,” Tubman seduces her master, telling him, “All these years I’ve been acting like I didn’t enjoy our special time together.”  The pair then engages in a sex act that culminates with Harriet’s master confessing his love for her, while she brushes him off, saying, “Look n*gga, I don’t give a damn about who you love.”

*long heavy sigh*

I’m not even sure where to begin.

Downplaying the very real rapes and abuse Black women endured during slavey? Check.

Casting an obese Harriet Tubman to play into of the negative stereotypes about Black women’s bodies? Check.

Portraying Black women as Jezebels who use sex to get what they want? Check.

Normalizing the idea that all Black women are sassy and always have something smart to say? Check.

Portraying Black men as coons? Check, check, check.

This video is not only completely unfunny, but it’s a slap in the face to Harriet Tubman, as well as the millions of enslaved African Americans who suffered through the unspeakable horrors of slavery.

I’m also saddened that Russell Simmons, who has been outspoken on issues of race and class over past few years, signed off on this disrespectful parody our history for the sake of a few YouTube views.

UPDATE: A petition has been created to get Russell Simmons to remove the video & issue an apology. Read more about it here

UPDATE # 2: Russell Simmons has taken the video down and issued an apology.

  • If black men cared about Harriet Tubman, as they should, there would not be as many men dependent on people like Al Sharpton and Russell Simmons in the first place.

If only a group of people could be responsible for how young black men are raised to keep them from being dependent on these creeps, staying home on sunday night, studying and always going to school and, for example, not being suspended 3 times and being fascinated by fights as evidenced in their text messages.

It goes both ways. If only more people could have seen how full of it he was and called him out on it, maybe he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to disparage a national treasure in the first place.

At a time when African American youth are using music, music videos and visual media to inform them about the world, Mr. Simmons does this! Our youth have no clue about their history/herstory! Why would Mr. Simmons, whom the youth know and follow his entertainers, choose to misinform an uninformed crucial segment of the African American community? Please help me understand this choice!!
