A Minnesota teen that had racked up a series of accolades — honor roll, college credits, and the title of cheerleading captain — will be going to prison after she was convicted on charges for prostituting a younger member of her cheer squad, the Associated Press reports.
“Tragically — for many — her high school years ended in criminal activity. She was the leader of an attempted high school prostitution ring,” Hennepin County District Court Judge William Koch said during the sentencing. “It is, in many ways, inexplicable.”
Monita Parker, the 18-year-old in question, pleaded guilty to the charges. She admitted in court that she told a 16-year-old cheerleader at Hopkins High School that she could earn money through prostitution. After the younger girl agreed, she placed an ad online and took her to an apartment to perform oral sex. The girl, who has a learning disability, received $60, which reportedly was used for “a pair of sneakers”.
Parker’s familiarity with online sex ads apparently came from a pervious relationship; it was revealed in court that Parker’s former boyfriend had attempted to pressure her into prostituting as well.
Parker must serve two years of time before being eligible for a release. She has also been ordered to register as a sex offender upon release from jail.
