BET’s new drama Being Mary Jane premiered last night and had social networks ablaze. The show stars Gabrielle Union, Omari Hardwick, Stephen Bishop, Lisa Vidal, and is written and produced by the husband-wife duo Salim and Mara Brock Akil.
Last night’s episode, which became the top worldwide trending topic on Twitter, started off with a bang. Mary Jane (Union) thwarts a suicide attempt by her best friend Lisa (Latarsha Rose), then jets home to a near-confrontation between her married lover Andre (Hardwick) and her old flame David (Bishop). If that wasn’t enough, Mary Jane is confronted by Andre’s wife (Robinne Lee), at her office, who asks some very personal questions before reminding Mary that she’s just the side-chick. Mary’s day goes from bad to worse when she hits the airwaves to cover an impending hurricane and her news team looks on in horror (and glee) while an old couple tries to ride out the storm. Add in a few doses of family drama, and a steamy shower scene with Andre, and Being Mary Jane had one hell of a premiere.
The show marks BET’s first foray into scripted drama, and show creators hope it will be as successful as its movie-length premiere. Last July, the 2-hour pilot brought in over four million viewers, making it one of the network’s highest-rated shows, beating all other competitors, except America’s Got Talent, in its time slot.
Being Mary Jane will run for eight episodes on BET. Will you be watching?
