Screen Shot 2014-02-01 at 4.08.57 PMI am constantly talking to strangers. It’s partly because I’m curious by nature and partly because strangers love to chat me up. That’s real. But anyway, here are a few of the conversations with strangers I’ve had over the past week or so.

Ended up having a long and very interesting conversation about love, race and gender with a middle-aged man at a fundraiser.

Me: After your first marriage ended did you ever think you’d marry again?

Him: Well, I guess I hadn’t thought about it too much, but then I met [second wife’s name]. I had to marry her. She is the most beautiful person inside and out that I’ve ever met in my life. Smart, sweet as can be and she just…she makes everything better. I feel fortunate to love someone like her.

Me: Awwww, I hope you tell her those things sometimes.

Him: Oh, she’s probably sick of hearing it!

Met this person at a media event. He was young. Le sigh.

Him: So, you’re a writer. If you had to pick a favorite writer, just one, who would it be? Who inspires you the most?

Me: There are a lot of writers I love, but if I had to pick one it would have to be Toni Morrison.

Him: Oh, okay. I’ve heard of him, but I’m not really familiar with his work. What has he written that I might know?

Me: Ummm…

I was minding my business at a department store the other day. I noticed a woman staring at me and finally after the third time I noticed I just gave a smile and a nod and kept it moving. That’s when she walked up to me.

Her: Oh my God! You look JUST like my friend! That’s why I was staring at you. I know you probably thought I was crazy.

Me: Ha! No, it’s cool. I have one of those familiar faces. I get that a lot–people thinking they know me from somewhere.

Her: No. You look JUST like her. I was about to get mad like “Why is this heifer not speaking to me?” But she’s cool though, so if other people think you’re her, you should be good. She don’t have no problems with people.

Me: Cool.
