Lean In

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook and the author of  Lean In, announced a partnership with Getty to combat  the imagery of women used in stock photos. One simple search for a stock photo of a woman in a business setting could lead you to believe all women at work are climbing ladders in mini-skirts and heels or standing on cliffs, but we all know that’s not true.

Last week, Sandberg’s Lean In organization announced a partnership with Getty Images to create a line of stock photos that depict mature, professional businesswomen, rather than ones who appear very sexualized and just plain dumb.

On top of creating a line of more realistic businesswomen, the photos will also include women actually working out, older women, people who aren’t model-sized, and biracial families. Men are also included in the collection as caregivers, braiding their children’s hair and holding babies.  Not only have stock images of women been given a make-over, so has the overall look of gender roles.  Check out Getty’s site to view the photos, but remember, they’re not free and Getty will sue you for misuse
