MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry and her husband James Perry received the best Valentine’s Day gift yesterday when they welcomed their new daughter into the world.
The couple’s adopted daughter was born on V-Day, and the proud parents are over the moon. The Perrys, who have been married since 2010 and co-parent Parker, Melissa’s daughter from a previous marriage, are excited to welcome their newest addition to the family.
The Perrys join the ranks of other high profile African American families who have adopted. Al Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts adopted their daughter Courtney in 1987; Magic and Cookie Johnson adopted a daughter, Elisa, in 1995; Alfre Woodard and her husband adopted a son, Duncan, and a daughter, Mavis; Viola Davis and her husband Julius Tennon adopted a baby girl in 2011; and Scandal showrunner Shonda Rhimes adopted two daughters in 2002 and 2012.
With so many Black kids in need of a good home, we hope other Black celebs (and regular folks) consider adoption as well.
Congrats to the Perrys on their new baby girl!
While it as been reported that the Perrys adopted their daughter, they have not specifically said whether they adopted or had the baby via a surrogate. I will update when more information is released.
