In conjunction with Diverse Muslim Voices, the PBS Independent Lens series will feature The Trials of Muhammad Ali, a documentary covering prize fighter Muhammad Ali’s life outside of boxing.

While we often see footage of Ali lighting the 1995 Olympic torch or receiving the 2005 Presidential Medal of Freedom, we may be less familiar with Cassius Clay, the person who converted to Islam and was ultimately stripped of his heavyweight belt, banned from boxing, and opposed to the Vietnam War.

This film provides an up close view of Ali’s battle to overturn the five-year prison term he received for refusing military service and to get acceptance from the American public.

The Trials of Muhammad Ali will air on PBS beginning April 14.
