Jake Bugg, the 20-year-old singer/songwriter whose debut album was called “a small revelation” by Rolling Stone, is looking to cross over to American audiences. Back in 2012 Bugg became the youngest male artist to score a number-one album in the UK, but it remains to be seen if he can replicate his success in the U.S. To help his cause, Bugg is currently touring the States and his label, Island/Def Jam, is gearing up to shoot his next video.
Which brings us to the curious casting call, which asks for a “heavyset” Black or Hispanic woman to fill the non-union role of the maid, while requesting dark-haired beauties, and perhaps blondes or redheads, apply for the role of the singer’s girlfriend.
Here’s the casting notice via ProjectCasting.com:

SAG talents only:
Lead Male – – musician build; age 18-24; brunette; Caucasian.
Lead Female – Musician’s model girlfriend; age 18-22;
dark hair preferably but open to blonde, redhead, etc.
even possible Asian, African-American background.
age 30+; heavy set; African-American, Hispanic etc.
Male/Female – open to all shapes and sizes, ethnic backgrounds,
etc. Would like to cast at least two (2) females
(would obviously be a plus if they actually have a
camera and flash and love to shoot…old school flash
cameras are a definite PLUS).
While specifying race, age, and body type is standard practice for casting calls, it’s interesting that the role of the maid echoes the not-too-subtle stereotypes about domestic workers.
