I don’t know about you, but I love rom-coms and romantic films. While fans and critics alike regularly debate the rank of several “mainstream” classics, the pantheon of popular Black romance flix is much smaller. But Issa Rae and Jahmela Biggs teamed up to change things.
Biggs, a Spelman grad, created First, a new web series that is billed as a modern day Love Jones.
First follows Robin and Charles, who have known each other since middle school, as they reconnect and finally decided to go on a date. The series follows the couple and “[documents] the milestones of dating as [they] fall in love one first at a time.”
The debut episode of First premiered last night on Issa Rae’s YouTube channel, and I’m already in love.
Directed by James Bland, the first episode lets viewers peek in on Robin and Charles as a “day of surprises unfolds, [and] they quickly realize there is more than friendship in their future.”
