Poet Saul Williams and veteran Broadway actress Tonya Pinkins will star in the new Tupac Broadway musical Holla If Ya Hear Me.
Williams is best known for his reoccurring role on Girlfriends and 1998 film Slam, and Pinkins is a Tony winner for Jelly’s Last Jam. She received nominations for Caroline or Change and Play On!. Her additional Broadway credits include A Time To Kill, The Wild Party and Radio Golf.
Also joining the cast is After Midnight’s Christopher Jackson, Ben Thompson, Motown: The Musical star Saycon Sengbloh, Dyllon Burnside and Joshua Boone. The production is led by veteran Broadway director Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, The Mountaintop).
Holler If Ya Hear Me is described as being “non-biographical” and focuses on two childhood friends living in a poverty-stricken Midwestern industrial city, struggling to realize their dreams. The production will feature songs from throughout the late rap icon’s career, including “California Love,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” “Me Against the World” and, of course, the title song.
Previews begin May 29 at Broadway’s Palace Theater and opening night is set for June 19.
