VH1 and America’s Next Top Model Tyra Banks are collaborating on the new docuseries TransAmerica.

The eight-episode series takes an earnest look at a group of five millennial Chicago women – who all happen to be transgender – living, loving, and building their careers. The show will explore how sexuality impact their lives.

“It would be easy to focus on the transgender aspect, but this series is about so much more,” says Susan Levison, VH1’s executive VP of programming. “This is a show about a group of compelling, gorgeous young friends who are on a unique journey while staying true to their authentic selves. We believe that message resonates.”

Model and transgender activist Carmen Carrera will lead the women while Banks will co-executive produce the show.

TransAmerica is a groundbreaking docuseries that will blow the roof off stereotypes and set the record straight as we experience the lives of these fun, stunning women. I am so happy to be part of telling their fierce story,” says Banks.

TransAmerica is slated to air late 2014 or early 2015.

  • Although I respect Tyra Bank’s drive, I have had some side-eyed moments concerning her treatment or her show’s (ANTM) treatment of plus-size women. For instance, there have been one time too many where she has had fashion designers or those styling the models that didn’t have clothes to fit the larger size models. If that is or has been the case, then why did she have them on the show? The very least she could have done was to alert those people of the need to have those size of clothes. All of those instances, had drummed up unnecessary drama on the show. Yet, she had preached about body acceptance on her talk show multiple times. She also chided shorter models (Those 5′ 7″) for not wearing 3-4 inch heels so there lack of height was not as apparent and showed her demons when Tiffany, a contestant didn’t bawl in a crying mess to show her gratitude and sorrow from being cut from the show. I may watch the show if it is just based on the particular people who are being profiled. However, if this is just another show where she either inserts herself or where she either does a voice over, narrates, or provides commentary, I am going to have to pass. Tyra needs to do better.

I admire Tyra’s success; however, I most likely will not be watching this show. The concept of the show does not interest me. I might watch two episodes out of curiosity if nothing good is own. I am happy these girls are following their dream. The show is just not on my must see list. I use to watch ANTM too. I stopped watching the show because it seemed too fake and silly. I did enjoy watching the first couple of seasons. I started disliking aspects of the show when Tyra chose the Rosemary Baby haircut for the beauty pageant girl. To me, the haircut was chosen based on her personal feelings towards beauty pageant contestants instead of the best haircut for the model.

All I have to do is watch RHOA to see transgender. Not interested.
