Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 1.46.27 PMThe average Frenchman may sip six times as much wine as the average American, but the United States still became the world’s largest market for wine last year, beating France into second place for the first time.

I didn’t realize we drank so much wine, but this is coming from someone who frowns upon reds and smiles for roses and whites, especially if it’s some crisp, only slightly sweet Moscato.

But apparently we bought 29.1 million hectoliters of wine in 2013, a rise of 0.5 percent over 2012, while the French consumed nearly 7 percent less, or 28.1 million hectoliters, than the prior year.

Overall, world wine consumption fell by 1 percent to 239 million hectoliters last year.

Can’t we fit 10 Frances into the United States? Just based on size, that makes sense. It’s crazy that the French drink so much wine that they were ever the largest consumers (it’s a pretty small country!).

It’s that super cheap wine that everyone buys by the case at Trader Joe’s that is raising the numbers. LOL
