If you’re not in support of Lifetime’s upcoming Aaliyah biopic, this news won’t make the film any more appealing. The movie, which features Zendaya Coleman in the lead role, will address the late singer’s illegal relationship with R. Kelly.

As most Aaliyah fans know, the singer married R. Kelly when she was 15 and he was 27. It was also rumored that she got pregnant with Kelly’s child at that age. A marriage certificate surfaced that fraudulently listed Aaliyah’s age at 18, and the marriage was later annulled by Aaliyah’s parents.

“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect,” said the biopic’s executive producer, Debra Martin Chase. “Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”

The film, which is slated to film this summer and premiere in the Fall, will cover Aaliyah’s life from age 10 to 22. It will be interesting to see how the producers handle her relationship with R. Kelly. What do you think of their decision to incorporate that controversial part of Aaliyah’s life in the film?

I believe the family will win the rights to her songs. Without her songs….having a movie about R. Kelly with her….won’t make a movie. Wheres the people who said she was very light to pale like the chosen actress? I still don’t see it.

Right? Compared to her friend Kidada Jones or Halle Berry. In other news her cousin says he thinks Zoe Saldana should play her.

      Everybody and their cousin indeed….

All this is very sad. I hope the family has a lawyer and such ready.

“In other news her cousin says he thinks Zoe Saldana should play her”.

He can’t be serious. He has to be saying that to drum up publicity and rile people up.

I always thought Aaliyah parents pimped her out to R. Kelly. Due to the fact they allowed their daughter to marry him and pow, spawns her music career.

We’ll never know for sure, but I don’t think her parents approved of or cosigned the marriage.

Back when they married, R. Kelly’s image was not what it is now. He wasn’t associated with being a predator. He was a sexy young R&B singer. Can you imagine being a 15 year old girl and a handsome, rich, man who is producing your music shows romantic interest in you? Even the most chaste of us would have a difficult time resisting a pull of a man like that.

I always felt as if she knew her parents would be pissed, so she married him, hoping that the marriage would lessen her parents anger, similar to the way people would sometimes get married back in the day if they knew they were about to have a baby. I believe that when her parents found out, they were furious and had the marriage annulled. Usually, you can only annul if there has been no consummation of the union, so that may explain why we never had proof of a baby. A baby would prevent them from getting an annulment in most cases.

“We’ll never know for sure, but I don’t think her parents approved of or cosigned the marriage.”

They may not have approved of the marriage, but I cannot believe they did not know what was going on between their daughter and Kelly. Yes, they annulled the marriage, but you know they could have also filed charges against him, right? Why didn’t they?

So that brings up the question: what was their role in hiding or turning a blind eye to Kelly’s predilection for young girls?

    • ALM247

Since I wasn’t there (and neither were you I presume), we are both just speculating. My guess as to why they didn’t press charges may be because they may have been threatened or blackmailed.

Think about it. With R. Kelly having now been brought up on multiple sexual predatory charges, it’s not far fetched that he may have threatened Aaliyah’s parents in some way if they tried to charge him or sue him. He had an image to portray, and I NEVER remember him admitting to marrying her or getting her pregnant. He knew what he was doing was wrong.

Look at the case against Bryan Singer. The charges are slowly beginning to go away.

These are rich and powerful people that we are talking about. R. Kelly was writing and producing on her cds, and he could have easily blacklisted her entire career if he wanted to. R. Kelly allegedly blacklisted Joe’s career. Joe has spoken publicly about this MULTIPLE times. You don’t think he wouldn’t do the same thing to a teenage girl?

People aren’t giving predators in Hollywood enough credit. That’s where they thrive especially white ones.

It was her uncle who introduced her to him the same one whose trying to get this lifetime movie made. It was her parents who did the damage control when they found out.
