It seems we have a drama-filled reality show for everything: pseudo housewives, hip hop “stars,” nurses, teen moms, girls who fight in multiple cities just because, and so forth. But we may never see a reality show on our beloved Black sororities and fraternities despite Mona Scott-Young’s attempt to launch one.
Last week, Scott-Young posted a trailer for Sorority Sisters, a show featuring members from Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. This week, there is no trace of a trailer…but there is an online petition called “End: Mona Scott-Young’s ‘Sorority Sisters’ Show.” As of press time, there are 20,434 signatures. The petition organizer, Reynoir Lewis, wants 25,000 names to deliver to Viacom.
“Stop the spread of ignorance and stereotyping of our beloved Black Greek letter organizations,” the petition begins.
Scott-Young would be lucky to pull this off anyway. As Jezebel contributor Hillary Crosley writes, it’s very difficult to obtain clearance from Black Greeks to use their letters on television. Peep School Daze and A Different World. We had to guess who the televised versions represented by looking at their colors.
Still, as an HBCU alum, I love me some step shows and would’ve tuned in just for that. I guess I’ll have to stick to homecoming visits to enjoy those, huh.
