The NBA made a huge diversity hire recently. Pam El has been appointed the new Chief Marketing Officer of the National Basketball Association according to a statement released by the organization. Not only is El the first African-American to hold the position, she’s also the first woman.

El will be responsible ‘directing brand development, overall marketing and advertising for the NBA, WNBA and NBA Development League,” the NBA statement stated. She reports to NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum.

Tatum has previously worked with El at State Farm. “She will be a huge addition as we work to build our brand on a global scale,” he stated.

El’s resume includes positions at State Farm where she left as its VP of Marketing in 2013. Previous companies include the Martin Agency, US WEST, and Terabeam. El graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth.

Congrats to Ms. El! What a unique last name.

It looks like Tatum just started his role in February, so I guess he made a point to take the top performers at his previous job with him.

In doing a little hunting, it looks like Tatum was recently hired by Adam Silver. I commend Adam Silver for both the way he has handled the Sterling situation thus far and for his effort in recruiting people of color in top roles in the NBA.

  • This is amazing news! Congrats to, Pam.

  • Congratulations to the Sister Pam El.

  • great news for not just El but also the NBA! i wish her the best!
