Actress, singer, and former Miss America Vanessa Williams opens up about being molested at 10 by the 18-year-old daughter of a family friend.
The now 51-year-old shared her story on a recent episode of Oprah’s Master Class. She says it happened the summer before fifth grade during a trip to California. She met the daughter – whom she describes as “one of the cool girls” who “made you feel like you were a grownup” – during a stay at another family’s home. One night, the daughter decided to enter the room where Williams was sleeping.
“She told me to lie down on the floor,” Williams says. “She took my bottoms off, and she told me to be quiet, and she went down on me. And at 10 years old, I had no idea what it was…I knew it felt good, but it was also something that I knew wasn’t supposed to be happening.”
Williams admits to carrying around shame and guilt for many years. She also felt she was more “sexually promiscuous” and “curious” than she should of been at such a young age.
“At that young age, having that happen to you, in your body, it awakens your sexuality at an age that it shouldn’t be awakened,” she says. “I think that had that not happened in my life, and I had an opportunity to have a normal courtship with a boyfriend at 16 or whatever…there wouldn’t have been that shame that was kind of always haunting me.”
