A new video of John Crawford III, the 22-year-old man who was shot and killed in a Ohio Wal-Mart, demonstrates the young man talking on the phone while leaning on a toy gun moments before he was fatally killed.
On Aug. 26, both the Crawford family’s attorney and Ohio’s attorney general held a press conference for the case.
As the family wait for a grand jury to determine the charges, it was decided the footage of Crawford would not be released. Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine stated he has no plans on releasing any evidence to the public to sway the public’s opinion on the case.
“What’s important is that it’s not been publicly released. I thought the family had the right to view it. The mom did not want to view it. I understand it. The dad did view it. To put the video out on TV is not the right thing to do,” Gaines said.
Michael Wright, the Crawford family’s attorney, said, “Everything released is one-sided. There is nothing favorable to John Crawford. You can’t show different pieces, show it all, don’t trickle pieces to gain favor of the public.”
Dewine did reveal a special prosecutor, Mark Piepmeier of Hamilton County, will handle the proceedings. Currently, the state is awaiting all the necessary paper work to be filed. The grand jury will convene Sept. 22.
