Morelli, who began as one of the head writers for “Orange is the New Black” five months after saying “I do,” revealed writing about sexuality encouraged her to examine her own feelings and sexuality. The divorce is an amicable decision between both Morelli and soon-to-be ex-husband Steve Basilone.
Morelli has decided to lead an openly gay life and is currently dating Samira Wiley. Wiley is also part of the “Orange is the New Black” family and plays Poussey Washington.
In a self-reflection piece published on PolicyMic, Morelli discussed how writing for Netflix’s hit series gave her the confidence to come out of the closet, so to speak.
As I watched Taylor Schilling [Piper Chapman] and Laura [Alex Vause] film the scene, one of our producers (as it happened, a gay woman) tapped me on the shoulder. She pointed at the screen and gave me a thumb’s up. It was a small gesture, but my first step toward feeling accepted and quietly accepting myself. In Piper and Alex, I’d found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like.
