A noose was discovered hanging from a tree on the Bryan Center Plaza early Wednesday morning at Duke University. Photos of the noose made its way on social media and is being called a hate crime.

According to reports, police were on the scene speaking to students who said they no longer feel safe on campus. Just two weeks ago, students chanted a racist song at a black female student, which prompted the university’s president to send an email about racial equality.

The Duke People of Color Caucus released the following statement on Tumblr along with a photo of the noose:

To all black students, staff, faculty, and/or Durhamites on campus and in the area: Please take care of yourselves and each other. This campus is not a safe space, and has proven beyond any doubt that it is a hostile environment for any and all black people.

  • we don’t know how it got there outsiders could have put it there if not stupid student put it there remember Duke University is located in Durham N. C. a majority black city with a lot of social problems. I would say the black students at Duke would be safer on Duke campus than on the streets of Durham.

According to news reports, the student has been identified as they admitted to hanging the noose. Why haven’t they release the name and identity like they did with OKU fraternity scandal? Perhaps because there are whispers that it may have been a Black student. Oh my, what a conundrum!
