A star college athlete and a classmate from Alabama’s Troy University have been suspended after authorities discovered a cellphone video that allegedly shows them sexually assaulting a woman at a beach while a large crowd of spring-breaker watched.
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen described the graphic video as the “most disgusting, sickening thing” he had ever seen. He says the footage shows several men surrounding an incapacitated woman on a beach chair. In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s department stated:
The Bay County Sheriff’s office obtained a video from the Troy Police Department on April 2, 2015. The Troy Police Department found the video during the course of an investigation into a shooting incident in their jurisdiction. The video appeared to be of a gang rape that occurred on Panama City Beach during Spring Break.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was able to identify the victim in the video. After speaking with witnesses to the incident, it was established the incident took place between March 10, 2015, to March 12, 2015, on the sandy beaches of Panama City Beach behind Spinnaker on Thomas Drive.
The victim told authorities that she thought she had been drugged at the time, and didn’t remember the incident well enough to report it.
Delonte Martistee, 22, of Bainbridge, Georgia, and Ryan Calhoun, 23, of Mobile, Alabama, were charged with sexual battery.
Troy University released a statement, which reads:
The students have been placed on temporary suspension from school per the University’s Standards of Conduct and disciplinary procedures. Martistee, a member of the track and field team, has also been removed from the team.
Additional arrests are expected.
